 Airlie Beach

Queensland Backpackers beautiful Airlie Beach

If you’re looking for picturesque views and a laid back vibe you will most certainly find it at Airlie Beach, a backpacker hotspot. There are rolling hills, a tropical lagoon, a serene forest, and cerulean seas.  This town is often used as a jumping-off point to reach the gorgeous Whitsunday Islands and the Great Barrier Reef, but don’t just breeze through. There might not be a ton to do in Airlie Beach, but that’s all part of the charm. Slow down a bit and relax at the beach or explore the Proserpine River Wetlands. Take your backpack off and spend a few days exploring this gem—you’ll be glad you did.

Explore the Proserpine River Wetlands: This amazing saltwater ecosystem is home to melaleuca forests, marine mangroves, and an abundance of wildlife, most notable saltwater crocodiles. These stunning creatures, often known as “salties” can grow up to an astonishing five meters in length. To approach these crocs in a safe and friendly way take an eco-tour through the wetlands. Certified guides ensure that you won’t do any harm to the crocs and perhaps more importantly that they won’t do any harm to you.

Take a swim in the Airlie Beach Lagoon: Much like in Cairns, Airlie Beach boasts an expansive swimming lagoon in its foreshore. This in part because the water is heavily populated by stinging jellyfish from November to May, known as the box jellyfish. The lagoon is a vast 4,300 m2 and contains 4.5 million litres of freshwater.

Hit the Beach: If you’re a beach lover, Airlie Beach is the place for you. You can always simply relax or swim, but if you’re feeling more adventurous plenty of opportunity for more thrilling activities abound. Try hang-gliding or parasailing over the beautiful white sand beaches and aqua Pacific or rent a kayak and go exploring.
